I made this video for AT&T Bell Labs in the early 1990s. It was just a the start of the World Wide Web but Bell Labs was a great research institution and in my experience, very forward thinking. Unfortunately AT&T never actually offered this to the public as things were moving too quickly when they and most technology leaders, failed to see that the Internet and the World Wide Web were about to change everything. what I mean by that is that they thought that they would "own" their service and keep the entire business. They didn't see the Silicon Valley startups like Netscape and others and the distributed power they would bring to the web.
In 1995, AT&T conceived the concept of "hosting" literally millions of websites and businesses. But that didn't happen either and the old AT&T that I knew and worked with for almost 20 years sold to a Texas company and though the name remains the same, the company's new.
Some of my subscribers have asked where videos like this ran since there was no YouTube and these were not television productions – made to fit within a 30 minute or 60 minute format.
There were many conferences back then. But it is interesting to see what their technology folks were thinking at that time. #internethistory #computerhistory #AT&Thistory #browserhistory "IThistory #technologyhistory
